How to Be Proactive in the Feminist World
By now, you’re quite knowledgeable about what it means to be a feminist. You read feminist blogs, you challenge sexism when you come into contact with it…but what comes next? How can you turn your identity as a feminist into a social activist for the movement? Here are just a few ideas to get you started:
Join your local National Organization for Women (NOW) chapter! Since 1966, NOW has been at the forefront of U.S. feminist organizing by educating and mobilizing women to be active in the movement. With chapters all across the country, joining NOW (or attending any of their events) is a great first step in becoming a feminist activist.
Volunteer! There are organizations, right in your community, that are constantly looking for an extra hand. From promoting the services offered at Planned Parenthood, to answering calls for a domestic violence helpline, you can make a difference in the lives of other women just by donating a few hours per month to an organization in your town.
Be politically aware! Do you follow local politics? Be aware of the legislation in your state that could help, or hurt, the lives of women. Call your representatives and tell them what issues matter to you. Volunteer on campaigns for politicians who make women’s rights a priority.
Plan (or participate in) a V-Day event! Founded by writer and activist Eve Ensler, V-Day is an international campaign to end violence against women. Produce The Vagina Monologues in your community, or host a screening of the documentary Until The Violence Stops, to raise awareness – and money – to combat abuse around the world.
Become a mentor! Today’s young girls are the next generation of feminists. Strengthen that generation by being a positive role model for girls, whether it be through tutoring, coaching a sports team, or signing up to be a Big Sister.
